Abstract
The following works are the products of my senior capstone titled, Sexual Violence and Women’s Health in Fredericksburg VA. This capstone was designed by Esther Hethcox and Dr. Mara Scanlon, Professor of English and Professor Edythe Evans, instructor of Journalism at the University of Mary Washington.
While a more detailed description of the course is included in the final course proposal, the course worked to provide awareness and representation for local women facing various modes of oppression in their lives. The produced works shed light on intersections of oppression that women in Fredericksburg face: gender, economic status’, race and sexual orientations, to name a few.
This project was one of the winners for the 2018 University of Mary Washington’s Women’s Studies Forum. The judges were impressed with the interdisciplinary nature of the project as well as its attention to social justice issues in the local community. I also presented this project at the Department of English, Linguistics and Communication’s annual Kemp Symposium in April of 2018.
