Abstract
Our ever-growing reliance on technology and digital media has profoundly impacted how we consume music in the internet age. In analyzing music semiology, particularly by using music semiology as a method, I analyze Ethel Cain’s Preacher’s Daughter, the differences between physical and digital media are assessed as well as how digital technology is changing the listening experience, both in terms of quality and quantity. The drastic shift from analog to digital has inherently changed access and distribution, while also expanding the interpretive tools available to all listeners. A variety of factors—such as the immediate gratification from streaming services and algorithmic music creation—have jeopardized the authenticity and authorship of the entire music industry. This research endeavors to help reveal the intricate relationship between new and established media, and the ramifications for listeners navigating this increasingly complex auditory environment in this new age, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of contemporary music consumption.
