Combined here are the Classics, Philosophy, and Religion departments. Students wishing to major in classics may choose among three concentrations: Latin; an interdisciplinary concentration in Classical Civilization; or an interdisciplinary concentration in Classical Archaeology. Students develop their major programs in consultation with a faculty adviser. In the Philosophy department, it is expected of the philosophy major to learn to read and analyze texts with attention to argument, to develop the ability to reason dispassionately and critically, to acquire the ability to articulate ideas and arguments both orally and in writing with clarity, precision and cogency. The Program in Religion aims neither to promote nor undermine any specific religion or belief. As an academic discipline, it seeks to understand religion by studying it outside of the framework of any particular system of belief. Courses are designed to acquaint students with the world’s major religious traditions, texts, and figures. Students explore the historical and cultural impact of religion in such areas of literature, scripture formation, law, politics, and ethics.
